Matthias Wittenburg: New Honorary Consul of Namibia in Hamburg - Visit of the Ambassador to promote German-Namibian Economic Relations

On 29 April 2019, the new Honorary Consul of Namibia, Matthias Wittenburg, was granted permission to hold the title of Honorary Consul of the Republic of Namibia in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Hamburg is one of the cities in the world with the highest number of consuls general and honorary consuls outside a state capital. In the future, Namibia will again be represented by a well-known business person in this global shipping and trade centre.

The ceremony took place on the occasion of a courtesy visit to Hamburg of H.E. Andreas Guibeb, Ambassador of Namibia to Germany.

The new Honorary Consul Matthias Wittenburg has been economically, culturally and socially engaged in Namibia for a long time and has more than 25 years of experience in the international banking and financing business. He has worked in specialist and management positions for Dresdner Bank, Lehman Brothers and Commerzbank and was a member of the Management Board of HSH Nordbank's Corporates & Markets division from 2013 to 2016. He founded WITTENBURG Corporate Finance in 2017. In the course of his career Matthias Wittenburg has acquired, structured and successfully implemented numerous M&A, Equity and Debt transactions on all continents. He has built up an extensive network within the financial industry as well as with multinational corporations and institutions. In addition, Matthias Wittenburg has a wide range of contacts in the medium-sized German economy as well as with political decision-makers.

International Cooperation

In addition to the exequatur of the new honorary consul, the Ambassador further et with Dr. Annette Tabbara, the state councillor at the Hamburg chancellery and delegate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg to the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Union and responsible for international affairs; as well as with Dr. Torsten Sevecke, state councillor (rank of state secretary; see photo below) in the Ministry of Economics, Transport and Innovation. Various points were discussed:

1. the establishment of a partnership between the Erongo region in Namibia and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg;

2. the conclusion of a Memorandum of Understanding between Namport and the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA)

3. establishing the Hamburg Regional Association of Friends Inspired2Inspire Namibia as a framework for Hamburgers to share their experiences in all areas, including shipping and logistics, with the people of the Erongo region in Namibia;

4. working with the Hamburg private sector companies to establish the 200 hectare Walvisbay Airport Special Economic Zone (WASEZ) together with the Namibian Industrial Development Authority (NIDA) and the Ministry of Industrialization Trade and SME Development.

Visit to the largest private container terminal operator

There was also a meeting with Thomas Eckelmann, CEO of Eurogate KG. Eurogate is Europe's largest container terminal and logistics group based in Bremen and independent of shipping companies. It is represented in all important ports in Europe and Africa. During lunch, the Ambassador spontaneously established a conference call with Clive Smith, CEO of the Walvisbay Corridor Group, to inform the attendees about the state of completion of the Walvisbay Container Terminal, which will be inaugurated in August this year.
The Embassy, the Honorary Consul of Namibia, the leadership of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and private economic operators look forward to German and European companies using this framework to make the Walvisbay Corridor the Gateway to trade with the domestic market of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its 270 million potential consumers. The completion of the N$10billion Walvisbay container terminal and the planned Trans Kalahari Railway (TKR) line developed in partnership with the Namibian and Botswana Governments will provide win-win opportunities for investors and all regional stakeholders in the SADC region.

Besuch des Botschafters mit Fortschritten in den deutsch-namibischen Wirtschaftsbeziehungen

Am 29. April 2019 wurde dem neuen Honorarkonsul von Nambia, Matthias Wittenburg, die Exequatur - zu deutsch: die Erlaubnis - erteilt, den Titel Honorarkonsul der Republik Namibia in der Hansestadt Hamburg zu führen.

Hamburg ist eine der Städte weltweit mit der höchsten Anzahl von Generalkonsuln und Honorarkonsuln außerhalb einer Landeshauptstadt. Auch Namibia wird künftig wieder durch eine namhafte Geschäftsperson in diesem globalen Schifffahrts- und Handelszentrum vertreten sein.

Die Zeremonie fand anlässlich eines Höflichkeitsbesuches des Botschafters von Nambias in Deutschland , S.E. Andreas Guibeb, in Hamburg statt.

Der neue Honorarkonsul Matthias Wittenburg ist seit längerem wirtschaftlich, kulturell und gesellschaftlich in Namibia engagiert und verfügt über mehr als 25 Jahre Erfahrung im internationalen Bank- und Finanzierungsgeschäft. Internationale Zusammenarbeit

Neben der Exequatur des neuen Honorarkonsuls standen Gespräche mit Dr. Annette Tabbara, Staatsrätin der Senatskanzlei und Bevollmächtigte der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg beim Bund, bei der Europäischen Union und für auswärtige Angelegenheiten sowie mit Dr. Torsten Sevecke, Staatsrat im Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Verkehr und Innovation im Mittelpunkt des Besuches. Dabei wurden verschiedene Aspekte besprochen, wie z.B.:

1. den Aufbau einer Partnerschaft zwischen der Erongo-Region in Namibia und der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg;
2. der Vereinbarug eines Memorandum of Understanding zwischen Namport und der Hamburg Port Authority (HPA);
3. der Gründung des Hamburger Landesverbandes der Freunde Inspired2Inspire, einem Forum, in dem die Hamburger ihre Erfahrungen in allen Bereichen, einschließlich Schifffahrt und Logistik, mit den Menschen in der Erongo-Region in Namibia teilen können;
4. die Zusammenarbeit mit Hamburger Unternehmen der Privatwirtschaft zur Gründung der 200 Hektar großen Walvisbay Airport Special Economic Zone (WASEZ) zusammen mit der Namibian Industrial Development Authority (NIDA) und dem Ministry of Industrialization Trade and SME Development.

Zudem gab es ein Treffen mit dem Vorstandsvorsitzender der Eurogate KG, Thomas Eckelmann. Eurogate ist Europas größter reederei-unabhängige Container-Terminal - und Logistik Gruppe mit Sitz in Bremen. Sie ist in allen wichtigen Häfen Europas und Afrikas vertreten. Während des gemeinsamen Mittagessens, stellte der Botschafter spontan einen Telefonkonferenz mit Clive Smith, dem CEO der Walvisbay Corridor Group her, der die Anwesenden über den Stand der Fertigstellung des Walvisbay Container Terminals informierte, der im August dieses Jahres eröffnet werden soll.

Die Botschaft und der Honorarkonsul Namibias, die Führung der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg sowie die privaten Wirtschaftsbeteiligten freuen sich darauf, dass deutsche und europäische Unternehmen diesen Rahmen nutzen, um Walvisbay zum Tor für den Handel mit dem Binnenmarkt der Entwicklungsgemeinschaft des südlichen Afrikas (SADC) und seinen 270 Millionen Konsumenten zu machen. Die Fertigstellung des Containerterminals und der geplanten Trans-Kalahari-Eisenbahnstrecke in Partnerschaft mit der Regierung Botswanas eröffnet Investoren und allen regionalen Interessensgruppen in der SADC-Region Win-Win-Möglichkeiten.
